A style of dwelling 5000 years old can still be seen in Loch Tay. Crannogs are the earliest form of houses on water and use alder (fearn) as piles, since alder is resistent to decay in water. Crannogs were used as dwellings over five millennia from the Neolithic Period, (see  Wikipedia).
